An Emotional Encyclopedia of War

2023/2024

radio art, 46’

Radio art project that investigates the transformation that comes with war via the locus of emotional emergency. It was launched in the summer of 2022 and went on into 2023, collecting recordings from a series of Emergency Rehearsals: immersive performance sessions, held with strangers and acquaintances in underground shelter spaces in the safe cities of the EU, where Anna travels with the project. Those recordings are combined with an auto-ethnographic journey of living in wartime Kyiv. This self-documentation is integrated in a palette of experiences which belong to foreigners from all around the globe, making a middle ground to bridge the gap of war experience within the composition space. Called out in a time of war, those experiences are featured in the piece together with Anna’s desperate attempts of reflection and composing sound in a post-invasion paralysis. An Emotional Encyclopedia of War postulates this war to be an all-encompassing event, that impacts people from different places on different continents. Co-produced with SEMI SILENT (in collaboration with Q-O2, ACSR) and CTM Radio Lab (with Deutschlandfunk Kultur, CTM Festival, ORF musikprotokoll im steirischen herbst festival, Ö1 Kunstradio, The Wire magazine and Goethe-Institut.) An Emotional Encyclopedia of War premiered on Deutschlandradio Klangkunst in a German version in 2024 and at Kunstradio on ORF. It pre-premiered at Radiophrenia Glasgow in 2023. The project was presented in Timisoara as part of Naratiuni Sonore Festival in 2023, and in Brussels and Charleroi as part of La Semaine du son in 2024. In 2024, the piece also took part in several festivals across Europe and worldwide: Orizont Sonor in Constanta, Moldox in Chisinau, RIDM in Montreal, and Longueur d'ondes 2025 in Brest. As part of the project, sound and light installation Voices In Safety, produced in collaboration with Banan Vedro, was shown during 2023 Fantazery festival exhibition in Yasinya (Ukraine).
